Future City 2016

Future City is a national competition that turned 45 year’s old this year!  Locally, the competition is put on by the Engineering Society of Detroit.

The competition begins in August, with students designing a virtual city on the computer model called Sim City. In the model they learn many facets, including zoning, taxes, keeping citizens happy, and how to successfully design and build a city.

After their virtual city is submitted, an essay describing their future city (100 years in the future) and the solution to this year’s challenge is completed and submitted.

This year’s challenge centered around the need for public spaces within a city.  Along with the essay, the students prepare a project plan.

The last part of the competition is building the city model to scale and giving their presentation to several judges.  Judges are mainly engineers from all backgrounds and ask students a huge variety of questions for over 2 hours.  Our students did great thinking on their feet and talking with adults!  Such valuable experience.

Their team, Galaxy Force, won an award which is in the trophy case.  Their award was the Visionary Award sponsored by LINK.   Helping with the model build was Mr. Hakala.
